Beetlejuice Jr. Review: Mother Margaret Mary Shines

The Edmonton Journal is proud to host reviews of local high school theatrical productions, written by student reviewers through the Alberta Youth Theatre Collective. This review covers Mother Margaret Mary's production of Beetlejuice Jr.

A Lively Show About Death

Despite being a show about “the whole being dead thing,” Mother Margaret Mary managed to bring the whole audience to life with their incredible production of Beetlejuice Jr. Capturing perfectly the spooky, exaggerated, and colourful world of Tim Burton’s original 1988 film, the school expertly navigated this complicated and ambitious show. Through the land of the living to the Netherworld, the audience was at the edge of their seats laughing, cheering, and completely swept off their feet.

Stunning Costume Design

One aspect that deserves all the praise is the show’s stunning costumes. With a team of only three people—Lynette Tom (also playing Lydia Deetz), Keira Flanagan, and Giselle Owusu—the soul of Beetlejuice Jr. was perfectly embodied through their design and creation. From Lydia’s impeccably teenage gothic outfit to Beetlejuice’s classic striped suit, every costume showed immense time, effort, and care. Standouts included Lydia’s red wedding dress and Miss Argentina’s fabulous gown. The ensemble costumes in “What I Know Now” featured burn marks, blood stains, and rips, with one cast member even carrying a real toaster. The costumes elevated the production immensely, leaving the audience blown away.

Expert Audience Engagement

Another feature that contributed to the show’s spectacular nature was the expert use of the audience and breaking the fourth wall. Mother Margaret Mary executed this flawlessly, avoiding any awkwardness. Beetlejuice, played by Nate Cook, had the audience roaring with laughter whenever he interacted smoothly with the crowd—he even started the show sitting among them. Throughout the production, cast members ran through the crowd and surrounded the audience during “Home,” creating an incredible surround-sound effect. This seamless use of the audience was unique and expertly executed, truly bringing everyone into the world they had created.

Outstanding Performances

Many elements were mind-blowing: Nate Cook’s insane vocal ability to perform Beetlejuice’s raspy voice, Pamela Anusiem’s stunning vocals, the skillful comedic timing of each actor, and the truly incredible ensemble. Kylie Flanders stood out in dual roles as Otho and a standout ensemble member, delivering an immersive and hilarious performance. Every cast, crew, and tech member should be proud of this wonderful, breathtaking, and “strange and unusual” show.
