Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose powerful raspy voice and epic power ballads defined the 1980s, has died at the age of 75. The Associated Press reported her death on July 9, 2026.
A Voice That Defined an Era
Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Wales, rose to international fame with her signature song "Total Eclipse of the Heart," released in 1983. The track, written and produced by Jim Steinman, spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the best-selling singles of the decade. Her other major hits included "Holding Out for a Hero," featured in the film "Footloose," and "It's a Heartache," which charted globally in 1978.
Throughout her career, Tyler sold over 20 million records worldwide, earning three Grammy nominations and a place in music history as one of the most distinctive voices of her generation. She represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with the song "Believe in Me," finishing 19th.
Tributes and Legacy
Fellow musicians and fans took to social media to mourn the loss. According to a statement from her publicist, Tyler passed away peacefully at her home in Wales surrounded by family. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
"Bonnie Tyler was a force of nature, both on stage and off," said music journalist Sarah Crompton in a tribute. "Her voice could shatter glass and heal hearts at the same time. She leaves behind a catalog of songs that will be sung for generations."
Tyler's influence extended beyond pop music. She was awarded the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2023 for services to music and charity.
A Career Spanning Five Decades
Born into a working-class family, Tyler left school at 16 to work in a grocery store before winning a local talent contest that launched her singing career. She underwent surgery in the 1970s to remove nodules on her vocal cords, which ironically gave her the husky, gravelly tone that became her trademark.
Her collaboration with Jim Steinman produced some of the most memorable rock anthems of the 1980s. "Total Eclipse of the Heart" remains a staple of karaoke bars, wedding receptions, and film soundtracks, and was famously parodied in the 2011 film "The Vow."
Tyler continued to tour and record into her 70s, releasing her final album, "The Best Is Yet to Come," in 2021. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert Sullivan, and their two children.
