Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens Publishes Remembrance Day Book for Veterans
Windsor Mayor's Remembrance Day Book Supports Veterans

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens has authored and published a poignant new book titled Scars of War in time for this year's Remembrance Day observances, with all proceeds dedicated to supporting local veterans' causes.

A Poetic Tribute to Local Heroes

The 32-page book originates from an original poem that Mayor Dilkens first presented during the 2020 Remembrance Day service, which was conducted under pandemic restrictions. The project represents a heartfelt effort to honor military service members while providing tangible support for veterans' initiatives in the Windsor community.

"Through the writing of this poem and publication of this book, it was important to me to find a tangible way to honour the lives and stories of our local heroes, while supporting their ongoing efforts to preserve and share our history," Dilkens stated in an official news release.

The Story of Jack: A Windsor Soldier's Journey

Scars of War follows the emotional narrative of Jack, a young man from Windsor who enlists to fight in the Second World War. The story traces his transformation through combat experiences and his subsequent return home, focusing on his healing process with the support of family and community.

Dilkens emphasized that the book serves to "ensure we continue to honour and remember our Veterans" while acknowledging that "war and conflict still create scars across the world today."

The mayor elaborated on this perspective, noting that "people still flee their homes under the shadows of bombs, carrying fear and hope of survival in their hearts. Innocent lives are still caught in the crossfire of violence they did not choose. Brave men and women continue to put themselves in harm's way to defend democracy, protect freedom, and shoulder a responsibility that most of us can only imagine."

Collaborative Creation Process

Local artist Christy Litster provided the book's illustrations, creating the visual elements while listening to recordings of her grandfather's firsthand accounts of living through World War II. "I was literally listening to his voice while drawing the images," Litster revealed, highlighting the personal connection she brought to the project.

The book underwent editing by Dilkens' Chief of Staff, Christopher Menard, ensuring the final product maintained its emotional resonance while delivering a polished reading experience.

Scars of War is currently available for purchase at $20 through amazon.ca, with Mayor Dilkens confirming that all proceeds will be directed to the Windsor Veterans Memorial Services Committee.
