The Royal Canadian Legion has announced a poignant selection for one of its most revered honorary positions. Deborah Sullivan of Pembroke, Ontario, will serve as Canada's National Silver Cross Mother for 2025, representing all mothers who have lost children in military service to the nation.
A Legacy of Sacrifice and Service
Mrs. Sullivan's son, Sergeant Craig Paul Gillam, made the ultimate sacrifice while serving with the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Afghanistan. On October 3, 2006, during Operation MEDUSA, he was killed while providing medical aid to wounded comrades—a testament to his bravery and commitment to his fellow soldiers.
"We are deeply honored that Mrs. Sullivan has accepted this important role," said Bruce Julian, Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion. "Her strength and dedication to honoring her son's memory, while supporting other military families, embodies the spirit of remembrance we hold dear."
The Significance of the Silver Cross Mother
The National Silver Cross Mother plays a crucial role in Canada's remembrance traditions. Each year, the selected mother:
- Lays a wreath at the National War Memorial on Remembrance Day
 - Represents all Canadian mothers who have lost children in military service
 - Participates in commemorative events throughout the year
 - Serves as a voice for grieving military families across the nation

Continuing a Family Tradition of Military Service
The Sullivan-Gillam family's connection to Canadian military service runs deep. Mrs. Sullivan's husband, Paul Gillam, served 35 years with the Canadian Armed Forces, while her father, Gordon Sullivan, was a decorated Second World War veteran. This multi-generational commitment to service makes her selection particularly meaningful.
"My son was a dedicated soldier who loved his country and his regiment," Mrs. Sullivan shared. "I am honored to represent all Silver Cross Mothers and ensure our children's sacrifices are never forgotten."
The Silver Cross Mother tradition dates back to 1919 when the Silver Cross was first awarded to mothers and widows of Canadian soldiers who died during military service. The Royal Canadian Legion has been selecting National Silver Cross Mothers since its formation in 1926.
As 2025 National Silver Cross Mother, Mrs. Sullivan will participate in Remembrance Day ceremonies at the National War Memorial in Ottawa and various other commemorative events throughout her term.
