Hollywood's awards season officially commenced on Sunday as the 83rd Golden Globe Awards took over the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Comedian Nikki Glaser returned to host the star-studded ceremony, which unveiled a slate of nominees celebrating both prestige and surprise.
Leading the Pack in Film and Television
In the film categories, Paul Thomas Anderson's paranoid thriller "One Battle After Another" emerged as the frontrunner, securing an impressive nine nominations. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Chase Infiniti, follows a weed-weary ex-revolutionary in a cat-and-mouse game with a fascist foe.
On the television side, HBO's glossy vacation anthology "The White Lotus" proved its enduring appeal, leading with six nominations for its Thailand-set third season. The series continues to explore how luxury resorts fail to contain the emotional baggage of their wealthy guests.
New Categories and a Unpredictable Night
The 2026 ceremony marks a significant expansion of the Globes' recognition, formally cementing podcasting as a peer to film and television. For the first time, the awards will present an honor for Best Podcast, with nominees including "SmartLess" and "Armchair Expert." A new category for Best Stand-Up Special on television also makes its debut.
While the Globes traditionally kick off the road to the Academy Awards, the night is known for its unpredictability. The famously broad nominee pool—inflated by separate drama and comedy categories for top film honors—combined with the voting body's suggestible nature, creates ideal conditions for wildcard wins. The open bar and convivial, roundtable seating further contribute to an atmosphere that feels less like a formal coronation and more like an industry celebration.
The live broadcast begins at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and will be available to stream on Paramount+.
