Baijiu Bar Patio in Edmonton Named Best in Canada by 100 Best
Edmonton's Baijiu Bar Patio Wins Best in Canada Award

Baijiu, an old world Shanghai-inspired bar in Edmonton, has been named the best bar patio in Canada by Canada's 100 Best as part of its 50 Best Bars 2026 announcement. The 230-seat outdoor space, located on what was once a parking lot, began as a necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Gamble That Paid Off

Owner Kevin Cam recalled that as the Edmonton Oilers prepared for their final home game at Rogers Place before the NHL shutdown, he foresaw that outdoor dining would become essential. He had previously attempted to lease part of the parking lot separating the Mercer Warehouse from the Government of Canada building but was repeatedly declined. However, with the pandemic threatening parking revenue, Cam struck a deal with the landlord. 'I gambled,' he said.

Year-Round Patio Innovation

Cam partnered with Edward Haynes of EJH Distribution to create a winter-ready space using materials from Tubbo, a European company specializing in all-weather patios found at Alpine ski resorts. The result is a patio usable 12 months a year. 'Edmontonians are patio crazy, whether it be summer, winter,' Cam said. 'My plan was, if you can utilize the winter patio that's heated, we will build it and they'll come, right? It's been great for us.'

Baijiu's Unique Vibe

Baijiu is known for Asian-influenced cocktails and upscale Chinese classics, with an interior that transports diners to the Shanghai French Concession. Behind a hidden door, Little Hong Kong offers an elevated cocktail experience reminiscent of a speakeasy or the film In the Mood For Love.

Patio License Fees

Because the patio is on private leased land, Cam avoids the city's new annual $6,900 license fee for all-weather patios using public spaces, which will double in 2027. While he sympathizes with affected entrepreneurs, he notes his lease costs far exceed that fee and views it as a cost of doing business.
