YMCA Calgary and the Calgary Public Library have unveiled an ambitious proposal for a new joint facility in West District, designed to meet the surging demand for recreation and library services in this rapidly growing area of Calgary. This collaborative venture aims to create a comprehensive community hub that addresses multiple needs through integrated programming and state-of-the-art amenities.
A Strategic Response to Population Growth
The proposed facility is a direct response to the explosive population growth in West Calgary, which has seen a significant influx of young families and new residents. With more than 3,000 new homes anticipated by 2030 and over 41,000 residents living within a 12-minute drive, the need for enhanced community infrastructure has become increasingly urgent. This project seeks to provide essential services that promote health, wellness, and social connectivity in a neighborhood poised for continued expansion.
Facility Specifications and Design Features
Planned for construction along Broadcast Avenue and 80th Street S.W., the facility is estimated to cost approximately $120 million. It will encompass 60,000 square feet of recreation space, including a seven-lane 25-meter pool, a leisure pool, a full gymnasium, multiple fitness studios, and a versatile multipurpose room. The library component will offer 9,000 square feet dedicated to children's areas, quiet reading zones, and community meeting rooms, fostering both education and engagement.
Outdoor amenities will be seamlessly integrated across the street at Radio Park, featuring a playground, spray park, basketball court, off-leash dog area, amphitheater, and expansive green spaces. To alleviate congestion and improve accessibility, the design includes a 200-plus stall underground parkade, along with designated accessible parking and drop-off areas.

Shannon Doram, President and CEO of YMCA Calgary, emphasized the critical role such facilities play in combating physical inactivity, social isolation, and unemployment. "By working together with the Library and our partners, we can create a welcoming, inclusive facility that meets the needs of a thriving community within a growing city," Doram stated, highlighting the collaborative nature of the initiative.
Sarah Milleur, CEO of Calgary Public Library, echoed this sentiment, noting that libraries serve as essential civic spaces. "Through this partnership, the joint-use facility would expand access to library programs and services while supporting recreation and wellness for residents of all ages," Milleur explained, underscoring the multifaceted benefits of the project.
Funding and Development Timeline
The funding model for this venture includes contributions from all levels of government, philanthropic support, and direct investments from YMCA Calgary. Truman has committed to donating the land on Broadcast Avenue across from Radio Park, facilitating the project's feasibility. An initial $3 million has already been approved by Calgary City Council for detailed design and planning, with the goal of making the project construction-ready by 2027, pending full capital funding.
A decision on construction funding is scheduled for the fall, and once government funding is confirmed, construction is expected to take approximately two years to complete. This timeline reflects the project's priority in addressing the immediate and future needs of West Calgary's burgeoning population.
