Catholic Central High School in Windsor transformed into a vibrant hub of cultural expression on Thursday as students participated in the school's second annual Multicultural Day. The event, themed 'Roots and Resilience,' featured an array of traditional foods, music, and performances that highlighted the diverse backgrounds of the student body.
A Day of Pride and Unity
Principal Melissa Cavallin described the celebration as a remarkable success, noting that it has quickly become a cornerstone of the school community since its revival last year. 'It was even bigger and more involved this year,' she said, emphasizing the growth in participation and enthusiasm.
The festivities took place in the school's central 'super commons,' where students set up cultural displays and shared dishes from their home countries. A school-wide assembly in the gym featured performances including dances, music, and spoken word presentations that reflected the students' cultural heritage.
Roots and Resilience Theme
Cavallin explained that this year's theme, 'Roots and Resilience,' was evident throughout the event. 'Our kids just completely exemplify that every day, but especially on that day,' she remarked. 'They were so proud to wear their cultural dress, share their cultural foods, and present cultural dances, songs and poetry. It was a really beautiful day.'
The celebration holds special significance for a school community that draws students from over 65 countries, speaking more than 45 languages. Many students are recent newcomers to Canada and Windsor, making the event an opportunity to share their identities and personal histories with peers.
Building Community Through Diversity
'For our students to be able to share something of where they come from — their language, their culture, their food, all different aspects of their history and their family — it’s a really beautiful opportunity,' Cavallin said. The positive response from students has solidified the event as an annual tradition.
'It’s everybody’s favourite day of the year,' she added. 'It really does represent who we are as a community. We come from so many different places, but together we make this beautiful mosaic of people, experiences and cultures — and we can celebrate each other.'
The event underscores the school's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated and valued.
