University of Calgary Alumni Group Drives Fundraising for New On-Campus Dinos Stadium
A dedicated football alumni group from the University of Calgary has successfully raised millions of dollars in early fundraising efforts to support the construction of a new on-campus stadium for the Dinos varsity sports teams. This initiative marks a significant step forward in creating a modern athletic facility that would serve multiple university programs and community needs.
Feasibility Study and Design Plans Underway
The University of Calgary, led by Dr. Nick Holt, Dean of Kinesiology, is currently spearheading the project and will soon issue a request for proposals for architectural design work. This process aims to assess the feasibility of constructing a training and competition facility with an estimated capacity ranging from 3,500 to 7,000 seats. The proposed stadium would include a seasonal dome to enable year-round use, making it a versatile venue for various sports and community events.
"Early support from community partners has been strong, which is why the university is taking this important step to assess whether the concept is practical and viable for the future," the university stated in an official release. Dr. Holt emphasized that the facility would support multiple Dinos field sports teams, including football, soccer, and rugby, while also providing opportunities for community sports groups to utilize the space.
Community Enthusiasm and Financial Strategy
Dr. Holt expressed optimism about the project's reception, noting, "We've received a tremendous response – there's a great deal of support in the community to help us make this a reality." He described the current momentum as a "perfect storm" of passionate support for the Dinos and recognition of the need for improved athletic infrastructure.
While specific details regarding the stadium's location on campus, construction timelines, and total costs remain undetermined, the university has clarified its financial approach. The institution aims to fundraise as much of the project costs as possible, with no plans to implement a student levy to cover expenses. Dr. Holt explained that the request for proposals will help advance the design phase, allowing for more accurate cost estimates and strategic planning.
Addressing Aging Infrastructure at McMahon Stadium
The Dinos football team currently plays home games at McMahon Stadium, which is owned by the University of Calgary but was built in the 1960s with a capacity of approximately 35,000 seats. Other varsity teams, such as men's and women's soccer, also occasionally use McMahon Stadium for their home games. However, the university's statement acknowledged that McMahon Stadium is an "aging asset" approaching the end of its useful life.
"As part of responsible long-term planning, the University of Calgary is assessing its future needs, including where its varsity athletes will train and compete in the years ahead," the statement read. Dr. Holt added, "We have always known the Dinos would outlive McMahon Stadium. That is becoming a reality in the years ahead."
He highlighted the broader community benefits, noting that a new on-campus stadium would provide a local resource for families, reducing the need for extensive travel to sports events. This project represents a forward-looking investment in both university athletics and community engagement, driven by strong alumni support and strategic planning.
