Tragic Discovery in Barcelona Waters
The body of James "Jimmy" Gracey, a 20-year-old college student from Illinois who vanished while on spring break in Spain, was located on Thursday in the waters off a Barcelona beach. Regional police in Catalonia confirmed the discovery, stating that divers positively identified the remains.
Last Known Whereabouts
Gracey, a University of Alabama student, was last seen in the early hours of Tuesday outside the Shoko nightclub in Barcelona. He had separated from his friends around 3 a.m. and never returned to the rented accommodation he shared with them. His family, residing in Elmhurst, a suburb approximately 19 miles west of Chicago, became aware of the situation when police contacted them after recovering his phone.
Family's Heartbreaking Statement
In a statement released late Thursday, the Gracey family expressed their profound grief and requested privacy. "Our family is heartbroken as we confirm that Jimmy's body has been recovered in Barcelona. Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss," the statement read. They extended gratitude for the global support and prayers while emphasizing the need for space to grieve.
Profile of the Student
Before the police confirmation, Gracey's aunt, Beth Marren O'Reilly, described him as "just a great kid, a good Catholic boy from the Midwest." She highlighted his academic achievements, noting he was in the honors program at the University of Alabama, served as chaplain in his fraternity, and was a role model to his cousins. Gracey had traveled from Alabama to Amsterdam for the weekend before arriving in Barcelona on Monday.
Ongoing Investigation
Catalan authorities have stated that their investigation into the cause of death is continuing. Gracey's father, Taras, is currently in Barcelona collaborating with police. The circumstances surrounding how police obtained his phone remain unclear to the family.
Barcelona as a Tourist Hub
Barcelona attracts millions of international visitors annually and is generally considered safe, with petty crimes like pickpocketing being the primary concern for tourists. The city's beaches, easily accessible from the center, are particularly popular among young travelers. The area where Gracey was last seen features several restaurants and nightclubs frequented by both locals and foreigners.
University and Fraternity Response
The University of Alabama issued a statement expressing heartbreak over Gracey's death, noting that his loss is deeply felt across the campus community. Gracey was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, where he held positions as chaplain and philanthropy chairperson for the school's chapter.
This incident underscores the somber realities that can accompany international travel, even in destinations perceived as secure. The community mourns the loss of a promising young individual while authorities work to unravel the details of this tragedy.
