Canadian Reservist Awarded Helmets to Hardhats Scholarship for Fanshawe College
Reservist Gets H2H Scholarship for Millwright Studies

A Canadian Armed Forces Reservist is paving a new career path in the skilled trades with the support of a national transition program. Matthew Steele has been named the first recipient of the Millwright Scholarship: Investing in our Future, awarded by Helmets to Hardhats (H2H). He is now enrolled in the Millwright certificate program at Fanshawe College's St. Thomas/Elgin Campus.

From Service to Skilled Trade

The scholarship, presented in partnership with the Millwright Regional Council (MRC) and the Association of Millwrighting Contractors of Ontario (AMCO), is designed specifically for Veterans and military members. It provides financial support and a direct pathway into Canada's construction industry. Steele, who remains an active Reservist, began his accelerated one-year program with an expected graduation date of August 2026.

In a statement, Steele highlighted the unique understanding the program has for those who serve. "It's a great option as a Reservist. Not only can you continue serving, you can also get your trades training," he said. "Helmets to Hardhats, Fanshawe, and the Millwrights also understand that part of it – the serving part – and they work with you on that." He praised the collaborative support from all three organizations in facilitating his career transition.

Building Futures for Canada's Military Community

The initiative underscores a concerted effort to leverage the discipline and leadership skills of military members to address critical labour shortages in skilled trades. James Hogarth, Executive Director of Helmets to Hardhats Canada, noted that Reservists like Steele possess inherent characteristics for success. "This scholarship gives them the opportunity to strengthen those skills with training and education," Hogarth stated, expressing pride in supporting Steele's dual commitment to his career and continued military service.

Mark Beardsworth, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Millwright Regional Council, framed the partnership as a strategic investment. "The discipline, leadership, and technical aptitude developed through military service align closely with the values of our trade," he said. The program aims to create meaningful, long-term careers for those who have served.

A Model for National Workforce Development

The scholarship represents a tangible model for supporting Veterans while bolstering Canada's industrial workforce. Patricia Penney-Rouzes, Executive Director of AMCO, commended Steele's dedication and service, expressing confidence in his future. "We're excited to support his journey into the skilled millwright trade," she said.

The announcement, made on December 4, 2025, positions the Helmets to Hardhats program as a key bridge between military service and civilian employment. By partnering with educational institutions like Fanshawe College and industry councils, the program directly contributes to building a robust, skilled construction workforce across Canada, offering a valuable second career to those transitioning from active duty.
