Calgary Dinos launch Women in Sport Scholarship Breakfast

The University of Calgary Dinos are set to host a landmark event aimed at propelling women's sports forward. The inaugural Women in Sport Scholarship Breakfast is scheduled for February 5, 2026, at the Hudson venue in downtown Calgary.

A Gathering to Foster Opportunity and Equity

This first-of-its-kind breakfast is designed to advance opportunity, equity, and support for women's varsity athletics at the university. The morning will serve as a powerful convergence point, bringing together student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and community members. A key feature will be a panel discussion with prominent women leaders from the sports world, offering insights and inspiration.

"Our mission is to develop leaders through sport, and the statistics are clear: the vast majority of women in C-suite leadership positions have a sport background," said Ben Matchett, the Dinos director of athletics. He emphasized the event's goal: "We want to remove barriers and make the University of Calgary the destination for the very best women's student-athletes in Canada."

Building on a Legacy of Excellence

The scholarship initiative builds upon a formidable history of success. Since 1964, Dinos women's teams have been a dominant force in Canadian university sports. Their impressive record includes:

  • 68 Canada West championships
  • 22 U SPORTS national titles
  • 29 Olympians who have collectively earned 8 Olympic medals

The new breakfast event seeks to strengthen the support system for future generations, ensuring UCalgary remains a top choice for elite female competitors. "While we have made significant strides in the support of women's sport, the work isn't finished," Matchett added. "This breakfast will kickstart a new era in women's athletics at UCalgary."

Direct Support for Student-Athletes

The practical impact of the event will be felt directly by the athletes. All proceeds from the Women in Sport Scholarship Breakfast will be directed to the Dinos Women in Sport Scholarship Fund. This fund is crucial as it helps student-athletes pursue both academic and athletic excellence without the burden of financial compromise.

Tickets for this empowering event are now available for purchase. The University of Calgary Dinos community invites all supporters of women's sports and leadership to join them in February 2026 to celebrate past achievements and invest in future success.
