Edmonton to Benefit from Major School Funding in Provincial Budget

Edmonton is set to receive funding for 10 new school projects as part of Alberta's Budget 2026, announced by Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides on Monday, March 9, 2026. This significant investment comes as the city grapples with growing student populations and overcrowded facilities.

Budget Allocation and Provincial Context

Budget 2026 has earmarked $3.3 billion over three years for the creation and modernization of school spaces across Alberta. This funding supports the broader Schools Now program, launched in September 2024, which aims to add approximately 200,000 student spaces by 2032 through new construction and renovations.

"The Schools Now initiative that we began in September 2024 to respond to this growth pressure will add and renovate approximately 200,000 student spaces," Nicolaides stated. "It will absolutely address that pressure that was over the course of the last few years and help to make up for previous years."

Distribution of Projects in Edmonton

The 10 new school projects in Edmonton represent a quarter of the 40 school projects promised in the budget. The specific breakdown includes:

  • Four schools for Edmonton Public Schools
  • Three schools for Edmonton Catholic Schools
  • Three francophone schools

With these additions, Edmonton now has a total of 37 school projects in various stages of development, contributing to the 161 active school projects currently underway across Alberta.

Addressing Urgent Capacity Issues

Sandra Palazzo, chairwoman of the Edmonton Catholic Schools board, emphasized the critical need for new infrastructure. "The need for new schools is real and urgent," she said. "Nearly half of our schools are operating beyond their intended capacity — even after adding 39 modulars to our two classrooms. These schools simply do not have the space to support further growth."

Palazzo noted that the division's overall utilization rate is 102 percent, with nearly 50 percent of schools at capacity and high schools operating at 112 percent utilization.

Timeline and Completion Expectations

Nicolaides explained that school projects typically take four to five years from planning to completion. However, progress is already visible, with Infrastructure Minister Martin Long announcing that 16 schools are anticipated to be completed in 2026 across the province.

In Edmonton, the Rundle Heights K-9 school is the closest to completion and is expected to open in November 2026.

Additional Funding for Modular Classrooms

Beyond the main school projects, Budget 2026 also allocates $600 million over three years to the modular classroom program. This initiative will add around 17,000 new spaces, with $200 million allocated annually to help alleviate immediate overcrowding while permanent structures are being built.

The provincial government's total commitment to the Schools Now program stands at $8.6 billion, reflecting a long-term strategy to accommodate Alberta's growing student population and improve educational infrastructure.
