A landmark partnership between Seneca Polytechnic and the City of Markham is set to create new pathways into fire protection careers for students from equity-deserving groups. The initiative, announced on December 4, 2025, includes a targeted bursary program and the donation of critical training equipment.
Financial Support for Future Firefighters
The cornerstone of the collaboration is the new City of Markham Entrance Award. This bursary is specifically designed for students from equity-deserving groups who are entering Seneca's Firefighter, Pre-Service Education and Training certificate program. Eight students will receive the award over a four-year period, with the first bursaries being granted starting in Winter 2026.
"We deeply appreciate the support the City of Markham is providing to our students and future graduates through this donation," said David Agnew, President of Seneca Polytechnic. "We share a commitment to both public safety and ensuring that all students have access to education and training that will prepare them for rewarding careers serving their communities."
Hands-On Training with Real Equipment
Beyond financial aid, the partnership includes a significant in-kind contribution to enhance practical learning. The City of Markham is donating two decommissioned fire trucks to Seneca Polytechnic. These rescue pumper trucks will be used in training to simulate real-world emergency response scenarios, giving students invaluable hands-on experience with the equipment they will use in their careers.
A Commitment to Inclusive Community Safety
Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti emphasized the city's goals for the partnership. "We're extremely proud to be partnering with Seneca Polytechnic on this award," Scarpitti stated. "The City of Markham Entrance Award helps open doors for students who might otherwise face financial barriers, giving them the support they need to pursue the education and certifications required for a career in firefighting."
He added that the program will "offer a meaningful opportunity for students to prepare for a future in any professional fire service across Ontario." The initiative directly supports broader efforts to improve diversity within fire protection services, ensuring they better reflect the communities they serve.
Seneca Polytechnic's School of Fire Protection Engineering Technology is known for its career-focused programs that combine academic theory with professional skills. This partnership with the City of Markham, a municipality recognized as Canada's most diverse community, represents a tangible step toward removing barriers and fostering a more inclusive next generation of first responders in Ontario.
