Rain Welsh, a student in the illustration and animation foundations program at Algonquin College, was among a select group offered advanced entry into either the illustration or animation tracks through an articulated agreement. This opportunity, which required maintaining grades and completing courses, was abruptly withdrawn when the illustration and concept art program was placed on a list of 30 programs under consideration for cuts in January. Welsh described the initial offer as validation of their hard work, stating, "To know that my hard work was going to pay off in a substantial way was nice." Similarly, Jasmine Tourangeau expressed excitement about her advance acceptance, noting it proved her efforts were leading toward success.

Concept artists play a crucial role in developing visual worlds for animated films, graphic novels, manga, brands, and video games, creating the aesthetic of characters, landscapes, and environments. "I was hoping to figure out what I could do with a bit more artistic training and make my own path and make my own business," they explained.
