Nova Scotia has announced the launch of the HomeShare program, a new initiative developed in coordination with 10 community groups across the province. The program aims to provide affordable housing solutions by connecting individuals with disabilities with homeowners willing to share their space.
Partnerships and Goals
Maria Medioli, executive director of Nova Scotia’s Disability Support Program, and Lora Church, executive director of Nova Scotia Community Living Organizations, jointly announced the program. The initiative is designed to address housing challenges faced by people with disabilities, offering a mutually beneficial arrangement for both homeowners and tenants.
Under the HomeShare program, homeowners can offer spare rooms or separate living spaces at reduced rents, while tenants gain access to affordable, supportive housing. The program also includes matching services and ongoing support to ensure successful placements.
Community Involvement
The 10 participating community groups will help with outreach, screening, and matching. These organizations have experience working with individuals with disabilities and will provide guidance throughout the process. The provincial government has allocated funding to support the program's administration and any necessary home modifications.
Officials emphasize that HomeShare is voluntary and tailored to the needs of participants. The program is expected to expand as more homeowners and tenants express interest.
