Constable Ty Bell-Morena reported at the scene that the boy, believed to be approximately 12 to 13 years old, was found by first responders after the collision with a westbound train. He was pronounced dead at the location. Bell-Morena described the situation as "absolutely horrible" for the boy's family, emphasizing the emotional toll of the tragedy.
Investigations revealed that the youth and another child were riding a motorized bike in the area prior to the accident. Police confirmed that all traffic signals at the railway crossing were functioning properly at the time, with barriers down, lights flashing, and an audible warning tone active.

Bell-Morena indicated that it appeared the boy had gone around the safety barrier, leading to the fatal incident. "This is a time, unfortunately, to remind our kids that when they're on these bikes to really mind the crossings, particularly at a railway passing," he stated via CP24.
Despite the circumstances, the constable was careful not to assign blame, noting his own childhood experiences with dirt biking. "I certainly don't want to pass on any blame towards the young man here. When I was his age, I was out on a dirt bike myself and you should be able to go out and have fun in a safe manner," he added.
