A 56-year-old woman from Westchester County, New York, tragically lost her life after falling into an uncovered manhole while stepping out of her vehicle in Manhattan on Monday evening.
Incident Details
The New York City Police Department reported that the woman had parked her Mercedes-Benz SUV near the intersection of West 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue, close to the Cartier and Nike stores, just before 11:20 p.m. As she exited the vehicle, she fell into an open manhole that was left uncovered.
Authorities indicated that the woman fell approximately 10 feet (about three meters) into the utility hole, which is owned by Con Edison, the city's power provider. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found the woman unconscious and unresponsive inside the hole, according to the New York Post.
After being rescued, she was rushed to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Family Seeks Answers
The victim's family expressed deep sorrow and shock over the incident. Speaking to ABC 7 New York, they demanded answers regarding how such a dangerous situation could occur. They are seeking a thorough investigation to prevent future tragedies.
Con Edison released a statement expressing profound sadness over the incident. "We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the public has died after falling into an open manhole. We are actively investigating how this occurred. Our thoughts are with the individual's family, and safety remains our top priority," the statement read.
The New York City medical examiner will determine the official cause of death. Meanwhile, Con Edison is conducting an internal investigation to understand why the manhole was left uncovered and to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences.
This incident has raised concerns about public safety and the maintenance of city infrastructure. Local authorities are urging utility companies to ensure that all manholes are properly secured to avoid such devastating accidents.
