The Toronto Port Authority has announced that the proposed expansion of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, commonly known as the Toronto island airport, will cost up to $5 billion. The figure was disclosed during a press conference on Monday, where officials outlined the scope of the project, which includes extending the runway, building a new terminal, and improving infrastructure to accommodate larger aircraft and increased passenger traffic.
Project Details and Timeline
Port Authority President and CEO RJ Steenstra stated that the expansion is essential to meet growing demand for regional air travel and to boost economic development in the Greater Toronto Area. The project is expected to be completed in phases over the next decade, with the first phase focusing on runway extension and terminal upgrades. The total cost includes environmental mitigation measures, as the airport sits on a sensitive island ecosystem in Lake Ontario.
Environmental and Community Concerns
Environmental groups have raised concerns about the impact on wildlife, water quality, and noise pollution. The expansion has also drawn criticism from some city councilors who argue that the funds could be better spent on public transit. The Port Authority, however, maintains that the expansion will create thousands of jobs and enhance Toronto's connectivity.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has expressed support for the project, emphasizing its potential to stimulate the provincial economy. The federal government is also reviewing the proposal, with a decision expected later this year.
The announcement comes amid other local news, including a Toronto man found not criminally responsible in a deadly stabbing being granted escorted visits, a Hamilton home search linked to a 2022 disappearance, and a B.C. couple winning $500,000 in a Lotto Max draw.
