Halifax Transit riders will have to wait longer for a tap-to-pay option, now expected to launch in December 2026, according to a report from CTV Atlantic.
Delayed rollout
The contactless payment system was originally slated to debut in early 2026 but has faced technical challenges. A report by Sean Mott on July 10, 2026, cited sources familiar with the project saying the new timeline pushes the launch to December.
Halifax Transit has been working to modernize its fare collection system, aiming to allow riders to tap credit or debit cards instead of using cash or paper tickets. The delay affects buses and the ferry service.
Impact on riders
The delay means commuters will continue to rely on existing payment methods for several more months. Transit advocates have pushed for faster implementation, citing convenience and efficiency.
According to Halifax Transit spokesperson, the agency is committed to rolling out the system but needs to ensure reliability. No additional delays are anticipated beyond December.
