Nova Scotia-to-Maine ferry sees passenger uptick vs 2025

The CAT Ferry, connecting Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, to Bar Harbor, Maine, has experienced a notable increase in passenger numbers in 2026 compared to the previous year, according to ferry operators. The rise is attributed to enhanced onboard amenities, expanded marketing efforts, and growing interest in cross-border travel.

Passenger Numbers Rise

Data released by Bay Ferries Limited, the operator of the CAT, shows that passenger counts from June to early July 2026 are up by approximately 12% over the same period in 2025. The ferry carried over 45,000 passengers in the first six weeks of the season, compared to 40,200 in 2025. Vehicle traffic also increased by 8%, with more than 12,000 cars transported.

“We are thrilled to see more travelers choosing the CAT for their journey between Nova Scotia and Maine,” said a spokesperson for Bay Ferries in a statement. “This uptick reflects our commitment to providing a reliable and enjoyable travel experience.”

Improved Service and Tourism Demand

Officials credit the increase to several factors, including the introduction of new food and beverage options, faster boarding processes, and targeted promotions in both Canadian and U.S. markets. The ferry service, which operates seasonally from June to October, has also benefited from a surge in tourism to Nova Scotia, which saw a 5% rise in international visitors in 2026.

The CAT resumed operations in 2022 after a two-year pandemic hiatus, and ridership has been steadily climbing since. In 2025, the ferry carried a total of 110,000 passengers, a figure that operators expect to exceed this year if the current trend continues.

Economic Impact

The increased traffic is a boon for local economies on both sides of the border. In Yarmouth, businesses report higher sales from ferry passengers, while Bar Harbor has seen a boost in hotel bookings and restaurant patronage. “The CAT is a vital link for tourism and trade,” said a representative from the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce. “Every passenger who steps off that ferry contributes to our community.”

The ferry service also employs about 100 crew members and supports dozens of local suppliers. With the uptick in passengers, Bay Ferries is considering adding extra sailings during peak periods to meet demand.
