Tap-to-Pay Launches on Victoria Buses for Contactless Fare Payments
Tap-to-Pay Launches on Victoria Buses

Tap-to-Pay Now Available on Victoria Buses

Victoria bus riders can now enjoy the convenience of tap-to-pay contactless payments, making boarding faster and easier than ever. The new system, launched by BC Transit, allows passengers to use credit cards, debit cards, or mobile wallets to pay their fare with a simple tap at the reader.

Contactless payments automatically grant riders fare privileges available in their transit system, such as a fare transfer or a capped daily fare. This means passengers no longer need to carry exact change or purchase tickets in advance, streamlining the boarding process.

"We are excited to bring this modern payment option to our customers," said a BC Transit spokesperson. "Tap-to-pay enhances the rider experience by providing flexibility and convenience, while also speeding up boarding times."

The system is designed to automatically calculate the best fare for each rider. For example, if a passenger takes multiple trips in a day, the fare will be capped at the daily maximum, ensuring they never overpay. Transfers are also handled automatically, allowing seamless connections between buses.

Riders are encouraged to use the same card or device for all trips within a day to ensure accurate fare capping. The tap-to-pay system is available on all Victoria Regional Transit System buses, and no additional registration is required.

This launch is part of a broader effort to modernize transit payments across British Columbia. Similar systems are already in place in other major cities, and the positive feedback has driven expansion to Victoria.

For more information, riders can visit the BC Transit website or check onboard signage. The tap-to-pay option is expected to reduce cash handling and improve efficiency for both passengers and transit operators.
