Suspected Sabotage Damages Railway Near Olympic Mountain Venues in Italy

Italian police reported a suspected act of sabotage that damaged a small section of a railway route leading to the Olympic mountain venues of Bormio and Livigno in the early hours of Wednesday. This incident follows similar attacks near Bologna over the weekend, raising concerns about security during the Milano Cortina Olympic Games.

No Service Disruption After Overnight Repairs

A spokesperson for the state-owned railway Ferrovie dello Stato confirmed that the incident did not cause any disruption to services. Technicians worked through the night to ensure safe operating conditions before the busy morning period, allowing trains to run as scheduled. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for this latest attack.

Previous Attack Near Bologna Caused Significant Delays

On Saturday, which marked the first full day of the Milano Cortina Olympic Games, rail infrastructure was damaged near Bologna. This earlier attack resulted in delays of up to two and a half hours for high-speed, Intercity, and regional services. An anarchist group claimed responsibility for that incident, highlighting ongoing threats to transportation networks.

Details of the Latest Incident and Investigation

The fire occurred overnight near Abbadia Lariana, on the eastern shore of Lake Como, along the Lecco–Tirano line. It burned seven cables in a trackside switching unit, with police finding the remains of a bottle of flammable liquid at the site. An investigation has been opened, and early assessments point to arson as the likely cause, according to authorities.

This series of attacks underscores vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure during major international events like the Olympics, prompting increased scrutiny and security measures.
