One dead, one seriously injured after car rolls into ditch

One person is dead and another is in hospital with serious injuries after a single-vehicle crash in rural Manitoba, according to RCMP.

Emergency crews responded to the scene on a highway near the community of St. Claude around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Police say the vehicle left the roadway and rolled into a ditch.

The driver, a 34-year-old man from the area, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, a 30-year-old woman, was airlifted to hospital in Winnipeg with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigation ongoing

RCMP say the cause of the crash is under investigation, but speed and weather conditions are being considered as factors. The highway was closed for several hours while investigators reconstructed the scene.

No other vehicles were involved. Police have not released the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin.

This marks the 12th fatal collision on Manitoba highways this year, according to RCMP statistics.
