NTSB Chair Details Chaotic Start to LaGuardia Crash Probe Amid DHS Shutdown

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy held a press conference on Monday to discuss the progress of the investigation into the deadly plane crash at New York's LaGuardia Airport, revealing a messy and delayed start to the inquiry. The incident involved an Air Canada plane colliding with a Port Authority fire truck on the runway shortly after landing on Sunday evening, resulting in the deaths of both pilots, injuries to dozens, and the closure of the airport.

Investigation Hampered by Travel Obstacles

Homendy noted that a team of NTSB investigators began arriving at the scene around 3:10 a.m. on Monday, but some were still en route during her press conference. She clarified that the agency had not yet completed a full day of investigation due to these delays. The challenges stem from the ongoing Department of Homeland Security shutdown, which has caused significant disruptions in air travel across the United States.

Homendy emphasized the impact of the shutdown, stating, "We have DHS that is shut down, and we have long TSA lines." She shared a specific example of an air traffic control specialist who was stuck in a TSA line for three hours in Houston before the NTSB intervened to expedite her travel. As a result, the entire investigation team was not expected to assemble at LaGuardia until midnight Monday or 1 a.m. Tuesday, with many members resorting to train or car travel due to airport issues.

Context of the DHS Shutdown and Political Standoff

The DHS shutdown began on February 14 after Democrats refused to fund the department without accountability reforms at Immigration and Customs Enforcement, following incidents in Minneapolis that led to fatal shootings. President Donald Trump has refused to compromise with Democrats and is now using the shutdown as leverage to pass his SAVE America Act, which includes voter registration requirements based on his claims about the 2020 election.

Trump escalated the situation by deploying ICE officers to airports on Monday to assist with security, vowing they will remain until Democrats agree to fund DHS. This move has added to the chaos, with over 3,450 TSA workers calling out sick on Sunday, the same day as the LaGuardia crash, leading to extremely long security lines nationwide.

NTSB's Independent Role and Oversight Authority

At the press conference, Homendy highlighted the NTSB's status as an independent federal agency, separate from the Department of Transportation. She explained that this independence is crucial because it grants the NTSB oversight authority over the Federal Aviation Administration during investigations. This point underscores the agency's role in ensuring a thorough and unbiased probe into the crash, despite the external pressures from the shutdown.

The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the exact causes of the collision, with Homendy's comments shedding light on the broader systemic issues affecting air travel and federal operations during this period of political gridlock.
