A bizarre car accident in Burlington over the weekend saw a vehicle ascend a hydro pole, while Hamilton authorities dealt with a series of unrelated criminal incidents, including a firearm seizure and a hate-motivated assault.
Burlington Crash: Driver Ends Up in Pole Position
On Saturday morning, a 20-year-old female driver from Mississauga was navigating a left turn on Highway 5 near Rock Chapel Road in Burlington. According to the OPP Highway Safety Division, wet and slippery conditions caused her to lose control of the vehicle around 10:46 a.m.
The car slid off the road and rode up the guy wire supporting a hydro pole, leaving it in a vertical position. Emergency services, including Burlington OPP, Fire, and EMS, responded to the scene. A tow truck was required to remove the vehicle, and the local utility company assessed damage to the pole.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the car sustained only minor damage. No charges were laid, but the OPP emphasized the importance of adjusting driving habits in adverse weather conditions to prevent similar accidents.
Hamilton Police Investigate Multiple Cases
Neighbour Dispute Leads to Firearm Seizure
In Hamilton's east end, police seized a loaded, sawed-off shotgun following a neighbour dispute on April 3. Officers responded to a residence on Cannon Street near Ottawa Street around 7:15 a.m. after reports of a fight and property damage.
Upon arrival, both individuals had fled, but police located a male matching the description of one party. After a brief struggle, he was arrested for uttering threats to cause death and mischief. A search of his belongings revealed the prohibited firearm, leading to additional charges.
Teen Shooting Victim Turns Up at Hospital
Hamilton Police are seeking public assistance after a 17-year-old girl arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m., but details remain unclear as the involved parties are not cooperating with investigators.
The victim is currently recovering from her injuries. Police are working to determine where and how the shooting took place.
Hate-Motivated Assault in Toronto
In a separate case, Toronto Police arrested a 37-year-old man, Darren Thomey, in connection with a hate-motivated assault. The incident allegedly occurred on January 16 in the PATH system between Scotia Plaza and First Canadian Place.
It is reported that the man spat on a victim in an unprovoked confrontation, then uttered anti-Black racial slurs. He faces multiple charges, including assault and failure to comply with probation.
Man Accused of Following Teen Girl
Toronto Police also charged a 30-year-old man, Daniel Frayne, after he allegedly followed a teenage girl in the Upper Beaches on Monday. The girl reported that the man blocked her on the sidewalk while she was walking home, then continued to follow her until she escaped and called police.
Frayne is charged with harassment by watching and besetting and is scheduled to appear in court on July 2.
Authorities across the region are urging anyone with information on these cases to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously to assist in ongoing investigations.
