Toll Rates Announced for Gordie Howe International Bridge with Discount Program
Gordie Howe Bridge Toll Prices and Breakaway Discounts Unveiled

The organizations responsible for constructing and operating the Gordie Howe International Bridge have officially disclosed the pricing structure for crossing the highly anticipated new border link connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan. This announcement marks a pivotal development as the bridge nears its scheduled opening in spring 2026.

Toll Structure and Breakaway Discount Program

On Wednesday, authorities detailed the standard toll rates alongside the introduction of a customer-focused initiative named Breakaway. Chuck Andary, interim CEO and chief legal officer of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating that it represents a crucial step in preparing for the bridge's operational debut. He highlighted the program's design to facilitate seamless travel for both individuals and businesses, enhancing flexibility and convenience at the border.

Passenger and Commercial Vehicle Pricing

For passenger vehicles, the standard toll will be set at Can $8 or US $5.75 per crossing. Participants in the Breakaway program will benefit from a 25 percent discount, reducing the cost to Can $6 or US $4.35. Commercial trucks, oversized vehicles, and larger passenger vehicles will incur a standard toll of Can $12 or US $8.75 per axle, with Breakaway members paying Can $9.60 or US $6.90 per axle.

Breakaway Program Launch and Features

Bridging North America (BNA), the private-sector partner tasked with building, financing, and operating the bridge, launched the Breakaway program on Wednesday. Initially available exclusively for business accounts, Breakaway offers exclusive toll rate discounts and streamlined payment options. Motorists equipped with Breakaway tags will experience expedited processing, allowing them to approach any open toll lane, have charges automatically deducted from their accounts, and depart within seconds.

Registration for commercial Breakaway accounts is currently accessible through the official Gordie Howe International Bridge website. BNA has indicated that personal user accounts will be introduced in the coming weeks, expanding the program's reach to individual travelers.

Bridge Specifications and Opening Timeline

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, featuring six traffic lanes, 16 toll lanes, and 60 inspection lanes for Canada and the United States, will establish a direct connection between Ontario's Highway 401 and Michigan's Interstate-75. Additionally, the bridge will include separate walking and cycling lanes, which will be free of charge, promoting alternative modes of transportation.

David Henderson, CEO of Bridging North America, expressed enthusiasm about the progress, noting that the launch of toll rates and Breakaway aligns with ongoing testing and commissioning efforts. He affirmed the commitment to delivering a modern and efficient border crossing, ensuring a smooth experience for all users upon opening.

While officials previously targeted an early 2026 opening, they have now refined the timeline to spring 2026, though a specific date remains undisclosed.

Competitive Context and Political Dynamics

Upon its opening, the Gordie Howe Bridge's tolls will be more economical than those of the Ambassador Bridge, which increased its rates in January to US$10 for passenger vehicles. Commercial vehicles crossing the Ambassador Bridge pay US$20 per axle, or US$15 per axle with its discount program.

The announcement comes amid ongoing opposition from Matthew Moroun, the billionaire private owner of the Ambassador Bridge, who has engaged in extensive efforts to hinder the competing publicly owned bridge. These actions have included advertisement campaigns, lobbying, and political donations, particularly to U.S. Republicans. In February, Moroun's reported meeting with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick in Washington garnered international attention, followed by social media threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump to block the Gordie Howe Bridge's opening.

As construction advances, the toll pricing and Breakaway program underscore the bridge authority's focus on creating a user-friendly and cost-effective border crossing solution, poised to enhance cross-border trade and travel between Canada and the United States.
