Eastbound collector lanes on Highway 401 in Scarborough have fully reopened following a crash that caused significant delays during the morning commute. The incident occurred early Tuesday, blocking multiple lanes and backing up traffic for kilometers.
Crash Details and Response
According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the collision involved multiple vehicles and was reported around 7:30 a.m. near the Morningside Avenue area. Emergency crews responded quickly, and the lanes were closed for investigation and cleanup. By 9:11 a.m., all lanes were reopened to traffic.
OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt stated, “Crews worked efficiently to clear the scene, and we thank drivers for their patience during the delay.” No serious injuries were reported, but the crash caused significant congestion during the peak travel period.
Impact on Commuters
The closure affected thousands of commuters heading eastbound through Scarborough. Traffic backups extended to the Don Valley Parkway and other connecting routes. Alternative routes such as Highway 2 and Kingston Road saw increased volume as drivers sought detours.
“This is a major artery for the GTA, so any closure here has a ripple effect,” said traffic analyst Mark Lee. “Drivers should always check real-time updates before heading out.”
Safety Reminder
OPP reminds motorists to maintain safe following distances and avoid distractions. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but speed and weather conditions are not believed to be factors.
