In a tragic aviation incident, an Air Canada jet carrying 76 people crashed into a fire truck while landing at New York's LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night, leading to the deaths of both pilots and numerous injuries among passengers and crew.
Details of the Crash and Casualties
The aircraft, identified as a Bombardier CRJ900, was arriving from Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal when it collided with a Port Authority aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle on the runway. According to Kathryn Garcia, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, all individuals on board—72 passengers and four crew members—have been accounted for.
Sadly, the two pilots were confirmed deceased, with notifications being handled by Air Canada's care team. Garcia noted that both pilots were based in Canada. In addition to the fatalities, 41 people were transported to two hospitals in Queens, with 32 later released. Nine individuals remain hospitalized, some in serious condition. Two Port Authority employees in the fire truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Sequence of Events and Investigation
The crash occurred as the firefighting truck was responding to a separate emergency involving a United Airlines flight, which had reported a strange odour during takeoff, causing illness among some flight attendants. Air traffic control recordings reveal frantic attempts to stop the vehicle and divert incoming aircraft just before the collision.
Photos from the scene depict the jetliner with its nose crumpled and cockpit peeled back, exposing damaged wiring and flight controls. A heavily damaged neon yellow fire truck was seen nearby, lying on its side. The airport was closed until at least 2 p.m. on Monday to facilitate an investigation led by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
Impact on Travel and Official Responses
The closure caused significant disruptions, with passengers rebooking flights for Tuesday or traveling to alternative airports such as Long Island MacArthur. On social media, Canadian Transport Minister Steven McKinnon emphasized that aviation safety is a top priority, with Canada collaborating closely with U.S. authorities on the investigation.
LaGuardia Airport, ranked as the 19th busiest in the U.S. in 2024 with over 16.7 million passengers, faces scrutiny as details emerge. The incident underscores ongoing challenges in airport safety and emergency response protocols.
