The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a targeted enforcement initiative against distracted driving in the Ottawa region on Wednesday, May 20, resulting in charges against 23 individuals. The operation led to a total of 56 charges, primarily for using cellphones while operating a vehicle.
Details of the Enforcement Blitz
According to the OPP, one driver was observed using a laptop computer while behind the wheel. Additionally, officers issued two child seat-belt violations, including an incident where a passenger was holding a baby on their lap without proper restraint.
Additional Offences Discovered
The crackdown also uncovered other serious driving offences. Five drivers were charged for operating vehicles without insurance. One individual faces a stunt driving charge, and two others were charged with driving while their licenses were suspended. In total, the OPP's Ottawa detachment issued 21 warnings alongside the charges.
This initiative underscores the OPP's commitment to reducing distracted driving and improving road safety. Distracted driving remains a leading cause of collisions in Ontario, and law enforcement continues to prioritize enforcement to deter such behaviour.
