According to authorities, the accident happened on Saturday, December 27, 2025. At least 15 people lost their lives in the crash, with the victims including 11 men, three women, and one minor. Firefighter spokesperson Leandro Amado confirmed the death toll to reporters.

In addition to the fatalities, approximately 19 individuals were injured and required transportation to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Emergency crews worked at the scene, located near Cumbre de Alaska in Totonicapan, to rescue victims from the wreckage.

The crash took place on the Inter-American Highway in the Solola Department, specifically between kilometres 172 and 174. This area is notorious for dense fog that severely reduces visibility for drivers, creating hazardous conditions on the mountainous road.

Images released by the local fire department showed the severely damaged bus at the bottom of the ravine as rescue personnel conducted their operations in the early hours of Saturday.
