According to the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO), Canada is set to spend $1.066 billion to host 13 FIFA World Cup games across Toronto and Vancouver. The report highlights that this amounts to approximately $82 million per game, a figure that aligns with previous tournaments when adjusted for inflation.
Federal and Municipal Contributions
The federal government will contribute $473.2 million, with the remaining funds coming from provincial and municipal sources. Security costs account for $79 million, while airport security screening, border security, and preparatory measures add $3.4 million, $4.3 million, and $3.6 million respectively.
Toronto's Allocation
The City of Toronto has allocated $380 million for its six games, including $236.4 million in operating costs and $143.6 million in capital costs. Operating expenses cover Toronto Police Services, Emergency Management, Paramedic Services, and Fire Services.
Vancouver's Budget
Vancouver will spend $578 million on its seven games. The World Cup kicks off on June 11 in Mexico City, with Canada hosting Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field on June 12.
Comparative analysis shows Russia spent $79.6 million per game in 2018, and Brazil spent $90.9 million per game in 2014. In US funds, Canada's per-game cost is $59.6 million.
