A young driver in Barrie was allegedly caught driving more than double the posted speed limit on a residential road, resulting in charges and the impoundment of their vehicle. Barrie Police reported that the incident occurred on a quiet street known for its low speed limits intended to ensure safety for pedestrians and residents.
Incident Details
Police officers on patrol observed a vehicle traveling at an excessive speed on a residential road. Upon clocking the vehicle, they determined it was traveling more than double the legal limit, which is typically 40 km/h in such areas. The driver, a young individual whose identity has not been disclosed, was immediately pulled over and charged with stunt driving under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
Under Ontario's stunt driving laws, the driver faces severe penalties, including an immediate 30-day license suspension, a 14-day vehicle impoundment, and a mandatory court appearance. If convicted, the driver could face fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, possible jail time, and a license suspension of up to two years.
Police Response
Barrie Police emphasized the dangers of excessive speeding on residential roads, where children, pets, and other pedestrians are often present. “This type of reckless behavior puts everyone at risk,” said a police spokesperson. “Our officers remain vigilant to ensure our roads are safe for all users.”
The vehicle involved was towed from the scene, and the driver was taken into custody for processing. Police have not released further details about the driver’s age or gender but confirmed that they are cooperating with the investigation.
Community Impact
Residents in the area expressed shock and concern over the incident. Many noted that speeding has been a recurring issue on that particular road, despite the installation of speed bumps and signage. “It’s terrifying to think someone would drive that fast here,” said a local resident. “We have kids playing outside, and this could have ended tragically.”
Barrie Police have urged anyone with information about dangerous driving in the area to come forward. They also reminded drivers that stunt driving is a serious offense with life-altering consequences.
