Mount Pleasant Affordable Housing Opens July 8, 2026

An affordable housing development in Calgary's Mount Pleasant neighborhood is set to open its doors to residents on July 8, 2026. This marks the first project administered by Calgary Housing, a new municipal agency tasked with expanding affordable housing options in the city.

First Project for Calgary Housing

Calgary Housing, established to streamline and accelerate affordable housing initiatives, oversaw the development from planning to completion. The Mount Pleasant project includes a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units designed for low-income households. According to city officials, the development prioritizes energy efficiency and accessibility, featuring sustainable building materials and barrier-free design.

Addressing Housing Needs

Calgary has faced a growing demand for affordable housing amid rising rents and population growth. The Mount Pleasant development is part of a broader strategy to add 3,000 affordable units across the city by 2030. “This project represents a critical step in ensuring that all Calgarians have access to safe, affordable homes,” said a spokesperson for Calgary Housing. The development received funding from all three levels of government, including $15 million from the federal Rapid Housing Initiative.

Community Impact

Located near public transit, schools, and services, the development aims to integrate residents into the existing community. Local community associations have welcomed the project, noting that it fills a gap in housing for families and individuals. The building includes common areas and green space to foster a sense of community. Move-in will occur in phases, with all units expected to be occupied by the end of July 2026.
