Victoria Williston Embraces Leadership Role at ByWard Market District Authority
Victoria Williston has officially stepped into her new position as the director of the ByWard Market District Authority in Ottawa, describing the role as "a dream job because it creates change." The 35-year-old former journalist brings a unique blend of communication skills and community-focused vision to the organization responsible for overseeing one of Canada's most historic market districts.
From Journalism to Community Leadership
Williston's journey to this leadership position began eight years ago when she first arrived in Ottawa to work as a morning anchor for CityNews Radio. A graduate of Humber Polytechnic's journalism program, she discovered her voice in broadcasting but faced a career crossroads when Rogers Media closed the CityNews operation.
"I can communicate. I can collaborate, and I thought to myself I needed something a bit more stable, with more regular hours," Williston explained during a recent interview conducted in the ByWard Market Heritage Building.
Her transition from media to community development began when she noticed a job posting at the ByWard Market District Authority. The organization, formed in 2023 through the merger of the ByWard Market BIA and Ottawa Markets, administers farmers' markets and supports business development throughout the city.
Building Connections in the Heart of Ottawa
Since assuming her new responsibilities, Williston has embarked on an extensive meet-and-greet campaign, engaging directly with business owners, residents, and various stakeholders throughout the ByWard Market area. These conversations allow her to introduce herself personally while listening to community concerns and sharing her priorities for the district's future.
Williston's connection to the area runs deep. When she and her husband first moved to Ottawa eight years ago, they chose to live in the ByWard Market neighborhood. "I'm from Toronto, and I'm used to an urban environment. I thrive with sidewalks. I love the diversity of a downtown; it's just where I thrive," she shared.
Her appreciation for the district's character extends to its landmarks, including the Ottawa sign and the Market-inspired sculptural installation by Victor Tolgesy that hangs in the Heritage Building where she now works.
Bringing Journalistic Skills to Community Development
Williston's background in journalism provides her with valuable perspective for her new role. As former news director at 1310 CityNews Ottawa, she developed skills in team leadership, communication, and storytelling that she now applies to community development.
"What I wanted to do in journalism was make meaningful change and tell stories and help people who sometimes can't help themselves," Williston explained, highlighting how her career transition allows her to continue pursuing these goals through different means.
Her appointment follows the departure of former BMDA director Zachary Dayler, with Williston having served as communications manager for the organization for two years before applying for the leadership position through a nationwide search.
Looking Toward the Future
As she settles into her new role, Williston will be transitioning out of her communications responsibilities once a replacement is hired. Meanwhile, she continues her community outreach efforts, emphasizing the importance of direct engagement with those who live, work, and visit the ByWard Market district.
The ByWard Market District Authority plays a crucial role in maintaining the vitality of Ottawa's historic market area, balancing preservation of its heritage character with support for modern business needs and community development. Under Williston's leadership, the organization aims to strengthen its connections with stakeholders while advancing initiatives that enhance the district's appeal and functionality.
Williston's personal and professional journey reflects a growing trend of professionals bringing diverse skill sets to community leadership roles, particularly in urban centers where effective communication and stakeholder engagement prove essential for successful development initiatives.
