The City of Airdrie has made a significant move to bolster its economic prospects with a $12.8-million purchase of industrial land. This investment, announced on Monday, involves acquiring 65 hectares in the East Points area of northeast Airdrie from Westside Land Corporation.
Mayor's Vision for Economic Growth
Mayor Heather Spearman hailed the acquisition as a "smart, forward-looking investment" that will play a crucial role in shaping the city's economic future. In a statement, she emphasized that securing employment lands now ensures local businesses have the space to expand and attracts new employers to Airdrie.
"By securing employment lands now, we're making sure local businesses have room to grow and that we're ready to welcome new employers who want to be part of Airdrie's success," Spearman said. "This is about strengthening our tax base, creating long-term opportunities, and positioning Airdrie as a strong economic partner in the region."
Long-Term Planning and Development Framework
The purchase aligns with the East Points Community Area Structure Plan, which was approved by Airdrie's council in December 2020. This plan established a long-term framework for industrial development in the city's northeast. According to the city, acquiring this land is a critical step toward activating the CASP and turning planned industrial growth into reality.
A Neighbourhood Structure Plan is expected to be completed by early next year, which will make the land "investment-ready for development." This strategic approach aims to maximize the land's potential for generating new tax revenue and fostering economic resilience.
