Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) has opened a dedicated claims centre to handle an estimated 22,000 storm-related claims following recent severe weather in Winnipeg. The centre, located at MPI's Gateway service centre, began operations on June 18, 2026.
Claims Centre Operations
The dedicated facility aims to streamline the processing of claims from the storm, which caused widespread damage to vehicles and property. MPI staff are working to assess damages and expedite repairs for affected customers.
Vehicles lined up at the Gateway service centre on the first day, as seen in images captured by CTV News Winnipeg's Jamie Dowsett. The centre is expected to operate extended hours to accommodate the high volume of claims.
Storm Impact
The storm, which hit the Winnipeg area earlier this week, brought heavy rain, strong winds, and hail, leading to significant damage. Many residents reported broken windows, dented vehicles, and flooded basements.
MPI has urged customers to file claims online or by phone to reduce wait times at the physical centre. The insurer is also coordinating with local repair shops to ensure timely service.
Community Response
Local officials have praised MPI's quick response in setting up the dedicated centre. Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham noted that the city is working closely with MPI to support affected residents.
“We understand the stress this storm has caused, and we are committed to helping Manitobans get back on their feet as quickly as possible,” said an MPI spokesperson.
