Barrie drivers are paying significantly more for car insurance than the provincial average, according to a new study by RATESDOTCA. The study found that Barrie residents pay an average annual premium of $1,836, which is 30% higher than the Ontario average of $1,414.
Study highlights insurance disparities
The RATESDOTCA study, released June 23, 2026, analyzed car insurance rates across Ontario and found that Barrie ranked among the highest-cost cities for auto insurance. The study attributed the higher rates to several factors, including a higher frequency of claims in the area, greater population density, and increased traffic congestion on major highways like Highway 400.
“Barrie has seen significant growth in recent years, and with that comes more vehicles on the road and a higher risk of accidents,” said a RATESDOTCA spokesperson. “Insurance companies adjust their rates based on local risk factors, and unfortunately for Barrie drivers, those factors are driving up premiums.”
Comparison with other Ontario cities
The study compared Barrie’s rates with other Ontario cities. While Barrie’s average premium of $1,836 is high, it is still lower than Brampton, which had the highest average at $2,358. Toronto averaged $1,728, while Ottawa averaged $1,512. The lowest rates were found in Kingston, at $1,102.
RATESDOTCA noted that drivers in Barrie can save money by shopping around for insurance, as rates can vary significantly between providers. The study also recommended that drivers consider increasing their deductibles or taking advantage of discounts for safe driving or bundling policies.
Impact on Barrie residents
Higher insurance costs are adding financial strain to Barrie residents, who are already facing rising living expenses. According to the study, the average Barrie household spends about 3.5% of their income on car insurance, compared to 2.7% for the rest of Ontario.
“It’s frustrating to know we’re paying so much more than other cities,” said a Barrie resident. “I’ve been driving for 20 years with a clean record, and my rates still keep going up.”
The study comes as the Ontario government considers reforms to the auto insurance system to make rates more affordable. In the meantime, RATESDOTCA advises drivers to review their policies annually and compare quotes to ensure they are getting the best possible rate.
