Canada Approves $4B Enbridge Pipeline Expansion

The Canadian federal government has given the green light to the Sunrise Expansion Project, a $4 billion natural gas pipeline expansion in British Columbia. Energy Minister Tim Hodgson announced the approval on Friday, stating that the project will add up to 300 million cubic feet of gas daily to Enbridge's Westcoast pipeline system.

Project Details

The expansion includes 140 kilometers of new pipeline across 11 looping segments running parallel to the existing pipeline, stretching from Chetwynd in the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains south to the Canada-U.S. border near Abbotsford. The project is expected to create up to 2,500 jobs and contribute approximately $3 billion to Canada's GDP.

Indigenous Partnership

The existing pipeline system is 12.5% owned by the Stonlasec8 Indigenous Alliance, a consortium representing 38 B.C. Indigenous groups. The project aims to strengthen energy security and price stability while creating new international trade opportunities, particularly for Asian markets.

Approval Process

First proposed in early 2024, the project underwent a two-year approval process. The Canada Energy Regulator gave its approval in January, subject to 47 binding conditions, with final cabinet approval coming on Friday. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer.

Minister Hodgson emphasized the project's importance for heating homes, businesses, hospitals, and schools, as well as bolstering British Columbia's LNG industry.
