Brampton Drug Kingpin Gets 20 Years in U.S. Prison

Guramrit Sidhu, a Brampton drug dealer known as the 'King,' was sentenced to 20 years in a U.S. federal penitentiary on Thursday for leading a violent criminal organization that trafficked hundreds of kilograms of methamphetamine and cocaine from the United States into Canada. The total value of the drugs was worth up to US$17 million.

Details of the Drug Trafficking Operation

According to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California, Sidhu orchestrated the distribution of eight separate drug loads between September 13, 2022, and October 24, 2022. The loads totalled approximately 523 kilograms of methamphetamine and 347 kilograms of cocaine. Sidhu arranged for the narcotics to be transported into Canada via long-haul semi-trucks for further distribution.

“After buying the bulk quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine in the U.S., Sidhu arranged for the narcotics’ transportation into Canada via long-haul semi-trucks for further distribution,” the release stated. “Sidhu provided telephone numbers and serial numbers on bills of currency for couriers to use as a ‘token’ for identification purposes during the delivery and transportation of the cocaine and methamphetamine.”

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

On March 26, Sidhu pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise. He has been in federal custody since October 2024. Sidhu was arrested in January 2024 and extradited to the U.S. by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to face charges.

U.S. officials noted that Sidhu is the seventh defendant to plead guilty in connection with the operation. Others have been sentenced to federal prison terms ranging from more than two years to nine years. Sidhu was at the apex of a syndicate with deep ties to former Olympian-turned-alleged drug lord Ryan Wedding. The Thunder Bay native relied on Punjabi truckers and trucking companies to bring the drugs into Canada.

Impact and Statement

The sentencing marks a significant milestone in the dismantling of a major drug trafficking network that funneled large quantities of narcotics across the border. Sidhu's 20-year sentence reflects the severity of his role as the leader of the criminal organization.
