Two teenagers are facing charges after a series of iPhone thefts linked to Facebook Marketplace transactions in Edmonton. Police allege the suspects arranged to meet sellers under the guise of purchasing iPhones, then stole the devices without payment.
Details of the Incidents
According to investigators, the thefts occurred over several weeks in May and June 2026. The suspects would respond to listings for iPhones on Facebook Marketplace, arrange in-person meetings, and then take the phones without completing the transaction. In some cases, force or threats were used.
Arrests and Charges
On June 17, police arrested two individuals, aged 17 and 18, in connection with at least five separate incidents. They face multiple charges including theft, fraud, and possession of stolen property. The 17-year-old cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police Warning
Edmonton police are reminding residents to exercise caution when using online marketplaces. They recommend meeting in public, well-lit areas, bringing a friend, and inspecting items before exchanging money. Officers also suggest using the safe exchange zones located at some police stations.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities believe there may be additional victims. Anyone with information is urged to contact Edmonton police or Crime Stoppers.
