San Francisco Settles Airport Name Dispute with Oakland

San Francisco has settled a two-year legal battle with its neighboring city across the bay, allowing Oakland to include "San Francisco" in its airport's name under strict conditions. The settlement, announced on Tuesday, permits Oakland's airport to be called "Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport," but prohibits the city from highlighting the words "San Francisco" or "San Francisco Bay" using different fonts, colors, or any other emphasis. Additionally, Oakland must place the word "bay" immediately after "San Francisco" and cannot use the term "International" in the name, even though the airport offers international flights.

Background of the Dispute

The conflict began in 2024 when Oakland, a diverse port city often viewed as the underdog compared to its wealthier neighbor, changed its airport's name to "San Francisco-Oakland Bay Airport." San Francisco officials quickly filed a lawsuit, claiming trademark infringement. They argued that the inclusion of "San Francisco" would mislead travelers, particularly those from abroad or unfamiliar with the Bay Area.

Oakland's Justification

Oakland officials maintained that the name change was necessary to help travelers unfamiliar with the region identify the airport's location in the Bay Area. They noted that many visitors mistakenly fly into San Francisco International Airport (SFO) even when their destination is closer to Oakland's airport. The airport's three-letter code, OAK, remained unchanged throughout the dispute.

Mary Richardson, attorney for the Port of Oakland, which manages the airport, stated: "We're proud Oakland fought for, and preserved the right to retain our airport's full name that puts Oakland first and recognizes OAK's location on the San Francisco Bay."

Resolution and Terms

Under the settlement, neither side admitted liability, and no monetary compensation was exchanged. San Francisco International Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet expressed relief at the resolution, saying: "We are grateful to have reached a resolution in this matter. This agreement provides clarity for travelers to make informed decisions about travel through our respective airports."

Geographic Context

Oakland's airport is located 12 miles (19 km) east of San Francisco and just over 30 miles from San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The agreement aims to reduce confusion for travelers while preserving Oakland's ability to reference its location on San Francisco Bay.
