Major Safety Recall for Peloton Exercise Bikes in Canada

Fitness technology company Peloton has initiated a significant voluntary recall affecting nearly 45,000 of its exercise bikes in Canada. The action was taken after reports emerged that the bike's seat post can unexpectedly break or detach while the equipment is in use, creating a serious risk of falls and injuries for riders.

Which Bikes Are Affected and What Are the Risks?

The recall specifically targets the Peloton Original Series Bike+ with model number PL02. The affected units are those with serial numbers beginning with the letter "T". According to Health Canada, the seat post assembly on these bikes can break during a workout, posing fall and injury hazards.

This recall encompasses approximately 44,800 machines sold in Canada and an additional 833,000 sold in the United States. These bikes were sold between the year 2020 and April 2025 through various channels, including Peloton stores, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and online retailers, with a retail price of around US$2,500 each.

Reported Incidents and Company Response

While there have been no injuries reported in Canada related to this specific defect, the situation is different south of the border. In the United States, Peloton has received three reports of the seat post detaching during use. Two of these incidents resulted in user injuries from falls.

In response, Peloton is urging all owners of the affected Bike+ models to stop using the equipment immediately. The company is offering a free replacement seat post that customers can install themselves. Peloton has set up dedicated channels for customers to request the replacement part or ask questions about the recall.

Canadian consumers are advised to contact Peloton directly at 1-833-821-0099 or through their official online support channels to arrange for the free repair.

A Recurring Problem for the Fitness Giant

This is not the first time Peloton has faced a seat-related safety issue. In 2023, the company recalled more than 108,000 bikes in Canada for a similar seat post problem. In that earlier recall, no injuries were reported in Canada, but in the U.S., 35 people were affected, including 13 who reported injuries such as a fractured wrist, cuts, and bruising.

The repeated nature of these recalls highlights ongoing challenges with the durability of a critical component on Peloton's popular home fitness equipment, underscoring the importance of this latest safety notice for Canadian consumers.
