Barrie police have charged a local woman with stunt driving after she was allegedly caught driving almost 50 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit on Highway 400.
Details of the incident
According to a news release from the South Simcoe Police Service, officers stopped the vehicle on July 8, 2026, after radar indicated the driver was travelling at 147 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Barrie, was issued a stunt driving charge under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
Under Ontario's stunt driving laws, a driver caught going 40 km/h or more over the speed limit on roads with a posted limit of 80 km/h or higher faces an immediate 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment. If convicted, penalties include fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, possible jail time of up to six months, and a licence suspension of one to three years.
Police remind public of dangers
"Speeding continues to be a leading cause of serious injury and fatal collisions on our roads," said South Simcoe Police in the release. "We urge all drivers to obey speed limits and drive according to road and weather conditions."
The woman is scheduled to appear in court in August 2026. Police did not release her name to protect the integrity of the legal process.
