23 Drivers Charged in OPP Distracted Driving Crackdown in Ottawa
23 Drivers Charged in OPP Distracted Driving Blitz in Ottawa

Twenty-three drivers face a total of 56 charges after an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) project targeting distracted driving in the Ottawa region on Wednesday, May 20. The initiative, conducted by the OPP's Ottawa detachment, resulted in numerous violations beyond cellphone use.

Cellphone and Laptop Use While Driving

Most charges were for using cellphones while driving, but one driver was found using a laptop computer behind the wheel, the OPP said in a social media post. This highlights the increasing problem of electronic device distraction on roadways.

Child Safety Violations

Two child seat-belt violations were also discovered, including one incident where a passenger was holding a baby on their lap instead of using a proper car seat. Such practices pose serious risks to child safety in the event of a collision.

Additional Offences

Beyond distracted driving, five drivers were charged for not having insurance on their vehicles. One individual faced a stunt driving charge, and two were charged with driving while suspended. The OPP also issued 21 warnings to other motorists during the operation.

OPP Statement

The OPP emphasized that distracted driving remains a leading cause of collisions and fatalities on Ontario roads. They urge all drivers to put away their devices and focus on the road. The Ottawa detachment continues to enforce traffic laws to ensure public safety.
