Tool Shed Brewing Company has been named the exclusive beer provider for WestJet, a partnership that was toasted in Calgary on Tuesday. Starting July 15, all WestJet flights with paid food and beverage service will carry three of Tool Shed's signature brews: Local Legend light craft beer, People Skills blonde ale, and Golden Hour hazy pale ale.
A Dream Realized for Tool Shed's Founder
Graham Sherman, president and founder of Tool Shed Brewing Company, expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity. “It’s horrifying trying to get a business up and running, and so this is one of those moments where it was all worth it. It was worth the battle,” Sherman said. The brewery, which started in his backyard tool shed in February 2012, now reaches 22 countries. Sherman noted that the selection of beers caters to all tastes: Local Legend is a light, low-alcohol option, People Skills is an easy-to-sip ale highlighting Albertan ingredients, and Golden Hour appeals to craft beer enthusiasts seeking extra hops.
Partnership Details and Impact
The five-year agreement builds on an existing relationship, as Tool Shed beers were already served in WestJet's Elevation Lounge at YYC Calgary International Airport. WestJet vice-president for loyalty and partnerships Steve McClelland called the partnership a “natural extension” and highlighted the shared Calgary roots and entrepreneurial spirit of both companies. “We understand what it’s like to have to go through the various stages of growth as a company,” McClelland said. “To be able to be in this position where we can partner together, it does bring back that WestJet spirit from days gone by.”
Tool Shed has already shipped 6,000 flats of beer, and production could double or triple as a result of the deal. “We’re ready to go, this brewery is built for speed,” Sherman added. WestJet passengers can also receive a 15 percent discount on food, beverage, and merchandise at Tool Shed's taproom by showing their boarding pass within 24 hours of departure or after arrival.
For Sherman, the partnership advances the brewery’s long-term goal: “We, for a long time, have been stating that our goal is to be Canada’s craft brewery. This is a great step in that direction. And for us to get beer further across the country, I mean, what an awesome move to be on Canada’s craft airline.”
