Windsor Auto Supplier Wins $20K Prize with Strategic Pivot to Agriculture Sector

A Windsor-based father-and-son custom injection moulding company that has traditionally supplied parts to the automotive sector is now betting on its future in the region's thriving agricultural industry. This strategic pivot has just earned them a significant $20,000 boost through a prestigious local competition.

From Automotive Parts to Agricultural Innovation

Stratus Plastics International, led by CEO Colby Wu and his father William Wu, has been supplying interior and exterior automotive parts in the Windsor area for approximately twenty years. However, facing increasing pressure in the auto sector, including tariff challenges that have impacted the entire Windsor region, the company began exploring diversification opportunities closer to home.

"We've decided to diversify our product mix, especially in Windsor," explained Colby Wu. "Obviously, we've gotten hit by tariffs. The whole Windsor region has gotten hit by tariffs. And so we decided to get into the agriculture business, because the agriculture business is thriving. It's been around. It's in our backyard. It's a big market."

ThermaRoot Technology Takes Top Prize

The company's agricultural division developed ThermaRoot, a root-zone heating and cooling technology designed specifically for commercial greenhouses. This innovative system delivers precise climate control directly to plant root systems, allowing growers to reduce energy costs, improve yields, and better protect crops from extreme weather conditions.

In an industry increasingly shaped by climate volatility and rising input costs, ThermaRoot represents a critical advantage for agricultural producers. The technology impressed judges at the WEtech Alliance ScaleUP Showcase and Pitch Competition held at Caesars Windsor on March 19, 2026, where Stratus Plastics was selected from a cohort of nine scaling companies to receive the $20,000 top prize.

"We believe it's an innovative product that could really change the industry as a whole," said Wu. "If we could succeed in Leamington, we'll succeed for the rest of the world."

Addressing Local Supply Chain Gaps

Beyond the ThermaRoot technology, Stratus Plastics has identified other opportunities within the region's agricultural supply chain. Historically, many agricultural plastic products—including clips, bins, and bags—have been imported from overseas.

"The products are getting imported from different countries, when really it should be localized," Wu emphasized. "We're trying to keep that money within our economy. We're trying to build, produce locally and supply locally to help the supply chain."

Funding for Commercialization

The $20,000 prize, awarded through WEtech Alliance's ScaleUP Accelerator program, will help Stratus Plastics push the ThermaRoot technology further toward commercialization. For startups and scaling firms, such funding can be pivotal in navigating the challenges of bringing innovative products to market.

Adam Castle, WEtech's director of venture services and partnerships, highlighted the importance of this support: "Being a startup, it's all about risk." The competition provides crucial resources for companies like Stratus Plastics to mitigate those risks while pursuing growth opportunities in new sectors.

This successful pivot from automotive manufacturing to agricultural technology demonstrates how established companies can adapt to changing economic conditions while contributing to local economic resilience and innovation in Canada's vital agricultural sector.
