The Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) has relaunched its free Seed Library, enabling patrons to check out seeds just like books. The initiative aims to help residents grow their own food, reduce food costs, and promote environmental sustainability.
How the Seed Library works
Patrons can select from a variety of vegetable, herb, and flower seeds at participating GVPL branches. After growing their plants, they are encouraged to save seeds from the harvest and return them to the library to sustain the program. The Seed Library operates on an honor system, with no late fees or fines for unreturned seeds.
Community impact and goals
According to GVPL, the Seed Library supports food security by providing free access to seeds, especially for low-income families and individuals. The library also offers workshops on gardening and seed saving. “We want to empower our community to grow their own food and connect with nature,” said a library spokesperson. The program initially launched in 2020 but was paused due to the pandemic; this relaunch includes an expanded seed selection and more branches.
How to participate
Residents with a valid GVPL card can visit any of the 12 branches offering the Seed Library. Seeds are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The library encourages participants to share their gardening experiences online using the hashtag #GVPLSeedLibrary. For more information, visit the GVPL website or contact your local branch.
