The South Osborne Commons project, a new childcare space and neighbourhood hub in Winnipeg, has taken a significant step forward. The development will include 84 licensed childcare spots, community gathering spaces, and other amenities aimed at serving the local neighbourhood.
Project details and community impact
According to CTV’s Daniel Halmarson, the project is designed to address the growing need for childcare in the area. The hub will also feature a multi-purpose room, a commercial kitchen, and outdoor play areas. The City of Winnipeg has supported the initiative, with construction expected to begin later this year.
The project is part of a broader effort to expand childcare access in Manitoba. The province has committed to creating more than 23,000 new childcare spaces by 2026 under the Canada-Manitoba Early Learning and Child Care Agreement.
Funding and partnerships
The South Osborne Commons project is a partnership between the City of Winnipeg, the Province of Manitoba, and local community organizations. Funding comes from federal and provincial sources, as well as community fundraising. The total cost is estimated at $8.5 million.
“This hub will be a vital resource for families in South Osborne,” said a city spokesperson. “It will provide quality childcare and a space for community gatherings, helping to strengthen the neighbourhood.”
Timeline and next steps
Construction is slated to begin in fall 2026, with an anticipated opening in late 2027. The project has received all necessary approvals and is now moving into the detailed design phase. Community consultations have been held to ensure the hub meets local needs.
The development is expected to create jobs during construction and provide ongoing employment for childcare workers and facility staff. It will also serve as a model for future community hubs in other Winnipeg neighbourhoods.
