The Women's Y of Montreal has officially opened a new social housing building called Residence-Elles, located just east of downtown. The facility is designed to provide safe and affordable housing for women and gender-diverse individuals in need, offering not just shelter but also a range of supportive services to help residents stabilize their lives.
A Safe Haven in the City
Residence-Elles features 40 units of affordable housing, each equipped with basic amenities to ensure comfort and dignity. The building includes common areas for community activities, a kitchen, and laundry facilities. Residents will have access to case management, employment support, and mental health resources through partnerships with local organizations.
“This is more than a building; it’s a community where women can rebuild their lives,” said a spokesperson for the Women’s Y of Montreal. “We are committed to providing a nurturing environment that empowers residents to achieve independence.”
Addressing a Critical Need
The opening comes at a time when affordable housing in Montreal is scarce, with many women and gender-diverse individuals facing homelessness or precarious living conditions. The project was funded through a combination of government grants, private donations, and community fundraising efforts. The Women’s Y of Montreal has a long history of supporting vulnerable populations, and Residence-Elles represents a major step forward in their mission.
Local officials praised the initiative, noting that it aligns with broader city efforts to increase affordable housing options. “Projects like this are essential to ensuring that everyone in Montreal has a place to call home,” said a city councilor who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Residents have already begun moving in, with many expressing gratitude for the opportunity. “I feel safe here for the first time in years,” said one new resident. “The staff are wonderful, and I’m hopeful about the future.”
The Women’s Y of Montreal plans to continue expanding its services and hopes to inspire similar projects across the region.
